Varimezov Family Band

moira smiley & VOCO

Saturday / April 18, 2015 / 7:00pm

Tzvetanka and Ivan Varimezov are recognized around the world as living masters of Bulgarian Folk music. They tour extensively and teach across Europe and America, so much so that singer Moira Smiley calls them the “Pied Pipers of Bulgarian music.” Known for their powerful polyphonic vocals they are also masters of doumbek, tupan, bagpipe and accordion. In a rare family appearance, daughters Radka and Tanya add their own vocal and instrumental genius. Let the Varimezov family introduce you to the music of the people.

moira smiley & VOCO tour the world with high-voltage harmony, folk-delicious instrumentation, stomp moves and body percussion. VOCO redefines harmony with lush, emotional layers of voices steeped in Appalachian and East European folklore. VOCO has the clarity and power of a string quartet and the vitality of street-corner singers. High energy performances include avant-garde arrangements of Béla Bartók’s Mikrokosmos, early American folk-hymns and original compositions — all performed with style, wit and warmth.
