From the Throat singers of Tuva, Siberia to music from the Czech Republic, Korea, Thailand, Mexico, and the magnificent diversity of Los Angeles artists - the Festival provides opportunities for you to cross boundaries of religion, class, culture, race, and language, to share cultural traditions and to contemplate the spiritual, ethical and ecological questions of our times. The 43 events in the Festival are an invitation to our many communities to witness music both familiar and new. Through music, each person in the audience can expand their definition of who they are as members of this city, go beyond the familiar, and explore the potential of intercultural and interfaith collaboration.
With the success of the 1999 and 2002 World Festival of Sacred Music - Los Angeles (WFSM-LA), a powerful coalition of arts, faith, cultural, community, and environmental groups announce the 2005 Festival. WFSM-LA is the largest citywide Festival in Los Angeles offering forty-three events over sixteen days in venues across Los Angeles region from September 17th to October 2nd.
In 1999 & 2002 this non-commercial, community oriented, citywide Festival had a combined estimated attendance of 90,000 people.
History: The first Festival was initiated by His Holiness the Dalai Lama in 1999 to mark the millennium with a message of peace, cultural understanding, and spirituality: the goal was to present the Festival on four continents. Building on the success of the “Americas” Festival, the LA organizing partners -
UCLA Center for Intercultural Performance,
Earthways Foundation, and the Foundation for World Arts - committed to the creation of a new Festival in 2002 and every three years thereafter.
