SACRED DRUMS OF INDIA

Journey through the vast continent of India on the rhythms of a great musical legacy: classical percussion. Musically challenging and emotionally evocative, improvisation is the hallmark of this evening featuring a gathering of India’s most celebrated and electrifying percussionists. Tabla Maestro, Pandit Swapan Chaudhuri from North India and Ghatam (clay pot) and vocal percussion master, Vidwan T.H. Subash Chandran from South India are joined by two of their brightest disciples, kanjira (tamborine) master Ganesh Kumar and American percussionist Jim Santi Owen on morsing (jaw harp).

Swapanji has been the principal tabla accompanist of Maestro Ali Akbar Khan for over twenty-five years. The preeminent exponent of the Lucknow school of tabla, he is a virtuoso soloist, accompanist, and teacher. Subashji is one of South India’s most renowned percussionists and teachers.
