St. James Presbyterian Church's Sunday Concerts is honored to present two diverse vocal groups performing
music from Europe and Asia. Nevenka, a Los Angeles-based women's folk chorus, performs songs from Eastern
Europe and the Mediterranean. Their repertoire includes traditional and composed songs from Bulgaria, Macedonia,
Croatia, Albania, Russia, Greece, Georgia, and the Rom (Gypsy) and Ladino Sephardic traditions. Nevenka was
formed in 1976, by women who shared a common interest in the complex harmonies and compelling rhythms typical
of Balkan music. Very much in the Eastern European tradition, Nevenka includes women of all ages making music
together. Joining Nevenka is the Philippine Chamber Singers - Los Angeles. Formed in 2004, the Philippine Chamber
Singers is composed of young virtuosic singers who bring their musical gifts as ambassadors of arts and goodwill
for the Filipino community in Los Angeles. The group is committed to nurturing choral music and preserving
Philippine's rich cultural roots. Their repertoire ranges from quintessential Philippine choral literature to
international music of various genres.
