MADRID THEATRE FESTIVAL OF SACRED MUSIC
A Festival Within a Festival

The Madrid Theatre’s Festival Within a Festival features Adaawe Women’s Percussion Ensemble; The Carpetbag Brigade Physical Theatre Company; Paul Livingstone & The Arohi Ensemble; Rangoli Indian Dance Troupe; the On Ensemble Taiko Drummers; and Capoeira Angola Center of Los Angeles. A food court features international delicacies prepared by local restaurants.

12noon: On Ensemble: As one Los Angeles newspaper put it, "On Ensemble ... has made its mark in both the U.S. and Japan with its one-of-a-kind blend of taiko and non-traditional styles including jazz, rock, and electronic."

1:45pm: The Carpetbag Brigade blends acrobatics, Butoh, contact improvisation, stiltwalking, and other theatrical tools to create cutting edge, original work for audiences of all ages, backgrounds, and locales. Mudfire is inspired by the forest fires that swept through Northern Arizona in 2002. Original score of live music by John Ludington.

3:00pm: Members of Capoeira Angola Center of Los Angeles demonstrate this ancient martial tradition combining music, song, movement, history, strategy, philosophy, and spirituality. A sacred space of being, awareness, and spontaneous rhythmic motion, Capoeira is one of many African cultural retentions found in the African Diaspora.

4:45pm: Adaawe's Talking Drums: Six women from diverse cultures come together to create rich, organic music of the voice and drum. In the Adaawe tradition of Ghana, West Africa, women gather in the moonlight to create music and sing songs of joy and sorrow.

7:00pm: Malathi Iyengar & Rangoli Dance Company with guest artist from India presents Tulasi, Sacred plant of India. Tulasi is associated with the earth goddess Lakshmi. Iyengar choreographs episodes demonstrating that even an object as small as a Tulasi plant offered with devotion means more to the Lord than all the wealth in the world.

8:30pm: Paul Livingstone & Arohi Ensemble's world music blends diverse classical and folk traditions of India, Brazil, Macedonia and America. Arohi means ascending melody and the ensemble features Leonice Shinneman on tabla, ghatum and percussion, Peter Jacobson on cello and contrabass, Paul Livingstone on sitar, fretless guitar and requinto with special guest Indian classical violinist, Jagannathan Ramamoorthey.
