Moon of the Scarlet Plums
Crazy Horse

Japanese Samurai culture meets Native American warrior in Moon of the Scarlet Plums. With unusual theatrical imagination and finesse, traditional Japanese Noh theatre and American Indian dance blend to tell the story of Chief Crazy Horse—legendary warrior and hero of the Lakota Sioux tribe—as he leads his descendants to find his vision and identity through a quest for his flute.

Written by celebrated contemporary playwright Erik Ehn and directed by Theatre of Yugen founder Yuriko Doi, the exquisitely crafted Moon of the Scarlet Plums premiered in 2001 as part of the U.S.-Japan 21st Century Project.

The cast is composed of members from the San Francisco-based Theatre of Yugen and the American Indian Dance Theatre. Kanze Noh actor Masashi Nomura plays the role of Crazy Horse. This one-of-a-kind performance is presented by the Torrance Cultural Arts Center Foundation in collaboration with the Japanese Traditional Performing Arts Organization.
