Flor de Serena’s Ladino Music in the Americas
Journeys from Spain to the New World

The mud walls of this historic mission form the backdrop for an evening of profound music that is deeply tied to the story of Southern California. The San Fernando Mission resonates with music connecting Old Spain to the new world, capturing the soul of Ladino (Judeo-Spanish) oral traditions from the Mediterranean basin. Flor de Serena, led by Artistic Directors Vanessa Paloma and Jordan Charnofsky, presents Ladino music in all its passion and power. Great percussion, a funky bass line, combined with flamenco guitar riffs and vocals that sound like Portuguese Fado make this group a visceral experience for anyone who loves music and soul. On the tail end of the 350th celebration of Jewish communities in the United States, Flor de Serena takes you on an acoustic journey marking Sephardim’s travels through Europe, the Ottoman Empire, North Africa and to the New World. The San Fernando Catholic Mission was founded by the Franciscans in 1797. This was one of the stops on the Camino Real during the same time these Jewish communities were being established.

Presented by Maquif Productions in collaboration with the Sephardic Educational Center.
