Sacred Music Sunday

The intersection of devotional and traditional musics, Sacred Music Sunday brings outstanding artists from diverse cultures to one of the oldest churches in Los Angeles on the Old Plaza adjoining Olvera Street. Over the past three decades, Taiko drumming in America has developed as a way for Japanese Americans to connect to their Japanese culture—emblematic of a young, energetic new direction, the TAIKOPROJECT is part of an emerging generation of players who are pushing taiko's boundaries on this art form to include new music, dance, theater, and storytelling. Celebrated guitarists Cristian Amigo and Carlos Hayre bring their understanding of the cultural and religious threads that are interwoven in South American music to a repertoire of new and traditional religious music. Amigo and Hayre are joined by Quique Cruz, Lichi Fuentes, and Braulio Barrera.

A passion for music, a richly eclectic repertoire, and an enthusiastic dedication to service are the cornerstones of the Angel City Chorale. This accomplished independent community choir conducted by Sue Fink is comprised of a diverse group—old and young, blacks and whites, Christians and Jews—whose exuberant, ecumenical spirit brings joy and inspiration to its audiences. Known for developing compassion and understanding for all living beings and the

environment, the Buddhist chants of the Sri Lankan Cultural Triangle were introduced in Sri Lanka by King Ashoka of India in the Third Century B.C. Helping to foster conscious minds to live a peaceful and harmonious life, this music and dance reaffirms and broadens our spiritual ties. Hosted by Plaza Methodist Church.
