Alessandra Belloni: Rhythm is the Cure
Born in Italy, Alessandra Belloni specializes in traditional Southern Italian folk dances and tambourine techniques learned from her field research and from the legendary percussionist Alfio Antico. Using the symbolism of the Madonna/Mother Earth found in Southern Italian culture, Belloni describes the cycles of life, women, and nature through powerful rhythms and haunting melodies. The concert—in collaboration with the Our Lady of Lourdes choir—features healing chants through ancient prayers, chanting and drumming that invokes the spirit world. At turns determined, strong, earthy and excitable, Belloni drums, dances and sings with primordial power.
