"I see hope and the positive part of life in the human spirit—and I mean in everyone's human spirit," says singer/composer Perla Batalla. On the heels of her graceful and powerful song cycle Mestiza, Batalla presents original compositions and Spanish-language classics from her latest CD, Discoteca Batalla, named for her parents' Latin American record shop. Arranged to reflect her rich bicultural personal and musical heritage, Batalla has taken the timeless songs she heard growing up in her parents' Los Angeles record store and molded their rhythms and melodic forms to create a stunning cross-pollination of trend and tradition—a resplendent, vibrant cultural celebration of mysticism, magic, and myth. Presented by Grand Performances as part of their free Summer Performing Arts Series.
