The
creation of Mozart's celebrated Requiem is one of the
most convoluted myteries in all of music history. The
tale begins as a messenger arrives on Mozart's doorstep
with a commission for a Requiem Mass from an anonymous
master. Would Mozart compose such a work, and if so,
at what price? Mozart accepted, with the condition that
he not try to learn the identity of the commissioner.
Before the end of that year, the composer himself was
dead. Although it was left unfinished by Mozart, the
Requiem is a grand work, powerful in its fearsome visions
of the Last Judgment, sublime in the gentleness of its
evocation of salvation and eternal rest. Hear this musical
offering of luminous beauty conducted by Esa-Pekka Salonen
in the spectacular new Cathedral of Our Lady of Angels.
This
concert is presented as part of the Los Angeles Philharmonic
Neighborhood Concert Program, which is supported in
part by Target Stores, City of Los Angeles Cultural
Affairs Department, Los Angeles County Arts Commission,
and the California Arts Council, a State Agency.
