Honoring the Sea

Mother of all life, the ocean is a source of nourishment for the soul. In their first appearance in the United States, the Lifou Island Dance Theater from New Caledonia performs their rhythmic, explosive, and ritualistic traditional music and dance on the sands of Santa Monica beach in stunning contrast to new work by choreographers Stephanie Adcock, Anjali Tata, Alesia Young and Norah Zuñiga-Shaw. Sounds of Santa Monica would not be complete without a drum circle. World-class drummers play rhythms from around the world. Bring your drum and join in. Swing Brazil under the artistic direction of Vida Vierra brings the day to an auspicious end as dancers and drummers flowers and prayers to Yemanja, the Brazilian Goddess of the Sea. Other participants include The Mutaytor, Koshin Taiko, Venice Drum Circle, and Lorenzo's Penga Marimba & Percussion.

Wear white, drummers bring drums, and prepare to dance in honor of our deep reverence for the earth's ecology and the living beings upon which depends. Presented in association with Earthways Foundation.
