Divine Bach: The Six Motets
Cantori Domino and the Mansfield Singers
So influential and dazzling are the Six Motets
of J. S. Bach that after hearing them performed at St.
Thomas Church in 1789, Mozart was said to have exclaimed,
"finally someone one can learn from." Similarly, Beethoven
kept only one volume of Bach's vocal music in his librarythese
cherished motets. Performed by the combined forces of
Cantori Domino and the Mansfield Singers, the evening
offers a rare opportunity to hear all six motets in
one concert. Sharing the conducting duties are Cantori
Domino's founder and artistic director Maurita Phillips-Thornburgh
and Kenneth Wells, founder and artistic director of
the Mansfield Singers. Accompanied by tne to twelve
instrumentalists, all but two of the motets (Motet I
and VI) are for double chorus. This performance includes
vibrant commentary by Bruce Langford, professor of music
history and voice.
