Axiom of Choice

. . . music that is tender and passionate, floating through the consciousness with the intensity of a dream.
—Don Heckman, Los Angeles Times

Poignant, innovative, soulful—these are but a few of the adjectives used to describe the music of Axiom of Choice. Formed in 1992 with core members guitarist Loga Ramin Torkian, vocalist Mamak Khadem, and co-producer and percussionist, Mammad Mohsenzadeh to define a new sound within the context of Persian music, the group embraces Western influences while remaining deeply rooted in its heritage.
Based on quarter-tone guitar, saz, diwan (Middle Eastern lutes), Persian vocals, the Armenian duduk, clarinet, and global percussion instruments, their cohesive sound is at the same time traditional and modern, Persian and yet global. Seeking—as they say on their album Niya Yesh—a direct communion with God, the group's music is self-expressive and powerful, contemplative and mournful, adventurous and mysterious. Their repertoire will include music from their latest recording Unfolding embracing the mystical poetry of Omar Khayyam. Presented by the Skirball Cultural Center.
