In this U.S. premiere, Secrets of the Alhambra unites Madrid’s Project Cancíon Española and Granada’s Flamenco Alhucema in a program that traces the influence of flamenco on Spanish art songs.

Founded in 2004 by mezzo-soprano Nan Maro Babakhanian and pianist Jorge Robaina, Project Cancíon Española is dedicated to the performance and preservation of Spain’s rich song literature. Their program includes the classical music of Spanish nationalists Manuel de Falla, Isaac Albeniz and Joaquin Turina alongside contemporary composers Teresa Catalan, Antón García Abril and José Luis Turina.

Guitarist Juan Miguel Giménez and cantor/bailor Antonio Vallejo of Flamenco Alhucema provide the rhythmic, emotive, and musical context that has inspired Spanish composers from the 19th century through the present day.

Sponsored by the Tourist Office of Spain, Los Angeles.

Cost: Freewill offering; no reservations required.
