Located at the crossroads of many cultures, Eastern Europe has developed an astonishingly rich and varied collection of secular and sacred music. With Sanctuary, Kitka Women’s Vocal Ensemble highlights traditional and contemporary Balkan, Slavic, and Caucasian (Georgian and Armenian) works sung in more than twelve languages. Featuring guest artist Tzvetanka Varimezova – one of Bulgaria’s most soulful and sought-after folkloric sopranos – the ensemble evokes Eastern Orthodox, Jewish, Islamic, and nature-centered beliefs that coexist throughout this diverse region.
With humble beginnings as a group of amateur singers from diverse ethnic and musical backgrounds, Kitka Women’s Vocal Ensemble is now recognized internationally for its artistry, versatility and mastery of its demanding vocal techniques. Its members share a passion for the stunning dissonances, asymmetric rhythms, intricate ornamentation and resonant strength of traditional Eastern European women’s vocal music.
Presented by Masters in the Chapel, First Lutheran Church of Venice.
Cost: Freewill offering; no reservations required.
