Partido Alto Astral: An Evening of Spiritual Sambas
Beto González, Artistic Director
THURSDAY, OCTOBER 6
Time: 8:00pm - 10:00pm
Cost: $15 general admission; $10 students
The sensual melodies and syncopated rhythms of samba are recognized around the world as a symbol of Brazil. What most people may not know is that this emotive musical tradition is deeply rooted in spiritual beliefs that reach back to Africa. In this special performance for the World Festival of Sacred Music, Artistic Director Beto González and Samba Society explore the interplay between rural and urban; music and dance; and sacred and secular practices that lie at the heart of Brazilian culture. With Partido Alto Astral, the secular rhythms of samba de roda, batuque, and partido alto are presented with depth and spiritual resolve.
Samba Society brings its own brand of vintage ‘roots’ samba reminiscent of classic recordings from the 1970s. Performers include Beto González on vocals and percussion; Simon Carroll on percussion and drums; Bobby Easton on percussion; Mitchell Long on cavaco and guitar; Keith Lungwitz on percussion; Dana Maman on percussion; Mauro Monteiro on vocals; Kátia Moraes on vocals; Emina Shimanuki on vocals; Kana Shimanuki on vocals; Colin Walker on 7-string guitar; special guest Mestre Amen Santo on percussion; dancers Gisella Ferreira, Rachel Hernández, and Shelby Williams-González; and very special guest Moacyr Luz from Rio de Janeiro.
