In an exhilarating synthesis of styles and sounds, New York composer-guitarist Cristian Amigo joins Los Angelenos Surrealestate for the premiere of Amigo’s Right Here, Right Now, written specially for the long-standing L.A. music collective. This improvisational piece focuses on the mindful and empathic experience that performers and audiences share as they both shape and transform the music. With group passages, individual solos, extended techniques and electronics, Right Here, Right Now encompasses multiple artistic and cultural perspectives, overlapping planes of time and space.
Cristian Amigo is an award-winning composer and guitarist committed to writing and performing new music. The Guggenheim Foundation Fellow earned a Ph.D. in Ethnomusicology from UCLA, is currently a visiting scholar in the NYU Latino Studies Program, and is composer-in-residence at INTAR Theater. Founded in 1977 by saxophonist Robert Reigle, Surrealestate is an ever-changing collective of L.A.’s most adventurous improvisatory musicians. This concert features members of the Third Millenium Surrealestate including: composer and music theorist Jonathon Grasse on electric guitar; Near Eastern music specialist David Martinelli on percussion; writer-librarian Jeff Schwartz on bass; and ethnomusicologist Charles Sharp on winds and small instruments. New music champion Gustavo Aguilar joins the ensemble on drums and percussion.
