Mamak Khadem Ensemble
A Window to Color
SUNDAY, OCTOBER 9
Time: 6:00pm - 8:00pm
Cost: $25 general admission
With a bold and revolutionary sound, classical Persian singer Mamak Khadem shares the universal message of peace and understanding through the poetry of Rumi and Sohrab Sepehri. Joined by an ensemble of musicians well-versed in traditions from east and west, Khadem’s A Window to Color explores our sacred, natural world. This unified communal experience begins with personal reflection and concludes with group participation, calling upon the sacred Persian traditions of meditation, chant and call-and-response.
Born in Iran, Khadem began singing at an early age. Although she was part of the Children's Choir for National Radio and Television of Iran, it wasn't until after the Iranian Revolution and her emigration to the U.S. that her passion for singing flourished. Since then, she has performed throughout the Middle East, Europe and the U.S. as a soloist and alongside cross-cultural fusion ensemble Axiom of Choice.
The Ensemble features Khadem on vocals and daf; Hamid Saeidi on santur; Mehrdad Arabifard on percussion; Fariborz Azizi on tar and setar; Roubik Aroutiounian on duduk and clarinet; Timothy Troy on percussion; and Afif Taian on oud. Together, they hope to inspire youth around the world to celebrate humanity and build cultural bridges towards a peaceful world.
Presented by Mamak Khadem in partnership with First Baptist Church Glendale.
