Expulsion is a modern interpretation of the universal story of Cain and Abel taken from the Old Testament. Set atop a tower of scaffolding constructed in a vacant lot, this site-specific work is based on themes of dislocation and relocation of families, human rights, and the fragility of what we consider ‘home.’ Directed and choreographed by Heidi Duckler and featuring dancers and choreography by Anna Djanbazian of Djanbazian Dance Company, Expulsion aims to explore these issues in dialogue with the local community. Composers Daniel Rosenboom and Alex Noice provide a bold and creative soundscape that draws upon traditional Persian and contemporary beats.
Heidi Duckler is the artistic director and founder of Heidi Duckler Dance Theatre. Since its inception, she has choreographed more than 60 original dance works at sites in Russia, Hong Kong, New York, Miami, Portland and throughout Southern California. Anna Djanbazian is the artistic director of Djanbazian Dance Company. An accomplished choreographer, performer and teacher, she created over 100 dances and full-length ballets in Iran. Duckler and Djanbazian both earned an M.A. in Choreography from UCLA.
