In celebration of their parish’s 100th Anniversary, the esteemed Choir of St. James’ invites you to the musical expression of their Anglican worship – Evensong. Dating from the time of the English Reformation to the present day, an evening sung service or “Evensong,” is an essential part of the total devotional practice offered to God by Anglican Christians. Choral masterpieces as well as familiar hymns have been composed over the ages with each performance an act of worship. St. James-in-the-City opens their doors to the public, knowing that the beauty of this music as performed by the Choir of St. James can be appreciated by any listener. After the Evensong service, the David Falconer Memorial Organ – which celebrates its 100th Anniversary as well – will be performed by guest artist and premier concert organist Alan Morrison.
The semi-professional Choir of St. James’ distinguished itself in 1996 as the first American choir to have sung in performance with the Choir of Westminster Abbey, London. They have since served three times as choir-in-residence at the Abbey and have also performed at Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford, St. George’s Chapel, Windsor, Wells Cathedral and Canterbury Cathedral. The Anglican service of Evensong is offered on the second Sunday of the month from October through May. Guest artist Alan Morrison is the Head of the Organ Department at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, PA.
Presented by Great Music at St. James’.
