Macedonian singer and humanitarian Esma Redžepova makes a rare U.S. appearance with her acclaimed Ansambl Teodosievski, sharing songs and stories about Roma culture, life’s beauties and disappointments, and the universal pain of unrequited love.

Crowned the “Queen of Gypsy Music” at the first World Festival of Romani Songs and Music in 1976, Esma Redžepova is recognized around the world as the torch-bearer of this unique musical tradition. With an illustrious career spanning over 50 years, she was recently selected as one of NPR’s “50 Great Voices.” Redžepova was born into an impoverished Jewish/Muslim Rom family in Skopje, Macedonia. A little girl with a huge voice, she was discovered at age fourteen by bandleader Stevo Teodosievski, whom she later married. Together, the couple adopted forty-seven children – many of which performed with Ansambl Teodosievski throughout the years. Since her husband’s death, Esma has continued to lead the ensemble he founded. For this performance, she is accompanied by eight members of this group.

Reception to follow.
