California Gharana with the Leela Dance Collective

The California Gharana takes us back in India’s history – a time when music, dance, theater and poetry flourished in the opulent courts of the Muslim and Hindu maharajas. This Indo-Islamic syncretic culture was at its heights with the arts leading the way for a rich and enduring exchange between Hindu and Islamic traditions.

Today the progenitors of KATHAK dance culture live all across the world from India to California. California Gharana unites –Rina Mehta, Rachna Nivas and Shefali Jain– disciples of the late legendary artist and guru, Pandit Chitresh Das. Percussive feet, articulate hand gestures and dramatic movements create a performance that is a living connection between many different eras and worlds.
