On hearing Italian virtuoso Mauro Giuliani play, Beethoven exclaimed, “The guitar is a miniature orchestra in itself!” What would Beethoven have said had he heard Jimi Hendrix? What would he have said had he heard eight electric guitars playing at once?
The Los Angeles Electric 8 is a group of classically trained guitarists who apply the electric guitar to traditional chamber ensemble repertoire, channeling their musicianship into extending the expressive capacity of an instrument usually reserved for rock. They rectify the absence of the electric guitar in classical music, revealing the instrument’s versatile potential in the world of art music.

The Los Angeles Electric 8 opens a fresh perspective on sacred music and presents an evening of works recast from their original instrumentation. Featuring adaptations of traditional Indonesian gamelan, organ music, chorales and more by Bach, Messiaen, Rachmaninoff, Mendelssohn, Villa-Lobos and others.

Performers include: Philip Graulty, Chelsea Green, Ben Harbert, Andy Nathan, Marc Nimoy, Alexander Sack, Felix Salazar and JohnPaul Trotter.

Produced by the Armory Center for the Arts

A largely volunteer effort, based on the intention to utilize the arts festival model to build genuine community cooperation and understanding, the World Festival of Sacred Music is presented by Foundation for World Arts and UCLA Center for Intercultural Performance.
