The women of San
Pedro’s own Zhena Folk Chorus offer
the haunting sound of Bulgarian folk singing,
marked by jagged rhythms, unusual harmonies,
and the odd, riveting beauty of a musical tradition
at the crossroads of many cultures. Gorgeously
costumed, they perform songs of celebration,
love, and longing, sacred and profane, marking
the daily and seasonal round of work and play,
sweeping listeners from fields ripening in the
sun to windswept coastlines. The Philippine
Chamber Singers bring their gift for
intriguing interpretations and striking arrangements
to sacred songs and other folk material from
the Philippines and beyond. Capella
Gloriana is an ensemble of superb singers
devoted to a repertoire that extends from Renaissance
to contemporary music. Stephen
Sturk conducts
Capella Gloriana in a program of American sacred
music from the eighteenth to twentieth centuries,
including one of his own compositions, to cap
an afternoon celebrating the glory of massed
human voices united in sacred song.
