The gaayaki-ang
(singing-style) of violin aims to capture the
nuances, subtleties, and intricacies of the human
voice as used in the vocal traditions of North
Indian music. For many musicians gayaki ang is
the ultimate, purest, and most spiritual form
of music and they aspire to play their instrument
with the versatility of the human voice. Jagan
Ramamoorthy, a disciple of Dr. N. Rajam
who pioneered this form will perform a solo concert
in this rarely heard style. He is accompanied
by the tabla master Abhiman Kaushal (disciple
of his father Shree Kaushalji), with Sheela
V. Bringi on tanpura. Several ragas
in the classical North Indian style will be performed
by this ensemble, including a collaborative piece
by Ramamoorthy and violinist Elisabeth
Waldo, a composer and ethnomusicologist
who is the founder and creative director of the
MultiCultural Music and Art Foundation of Northridge.
Produced
by: Ms. Elisabeth Waldo, violinist and ethnomusicologist;
The Rancho Cordillera Del Norte-MCMAFN Foundation;
and the Spundana Mudra Foundation.
